Dear Mr. Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei,

I am writing to express my grave concern about the Iranian-Swedish physician and researcher Ahmadreza Djalali, who has been detained in Iran since his arrest in April 2016.

Ahmadreza Djalali was sentenced to death for "corruption on earth" (efsad-e fel-arz) in 2017 after a grossly unfair trial. He is being accused of collaborating with Israel, something he denies. His ongoing detention is arbitrary due to grave violations of his fair trial rights. In June 2025, he was disappeared for weeks, without his family or lawyers knowing where or how he was. I am gravely concerned that Ahmadreza Djalali could be executed in secret. In addition, he has in the past been denied access to adequate medical care, including following a heart attack in May 2025, which raises further fears about his health and physical integrity.

As member / sympathizer of Amnesty International, I urge you to halt any plans to execute Ahmadreza Djalali, quash his conviction and death sentence, and immediately and unconditionally release him. Pending his release, please ensure that he receives access to adequate medical care and is protected from further torture and other ill-treatment. In addition, I call on you to establish an official moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty.
