Dear Mr President,

Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak was arrested in September 2001. At the time, he had complained to the Ministry of Information about the closure of independent media outlets. Since then, the Eritrean authorities have held him incommunicado. They have refused to disclose his whereabouts or provide any information about his health condition.

In December 2025, the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs travelled to Eritrea. During her visit, she raised the case of Dawit Isaak. Eritrea’s Minister of Information, Yemane Ghebremeskel, told her that Dawit Isaak was not being accused because of his journalistic work or his views. Instead, he claimed that Dawit Isaak had been in touch with an opposition group that was accused of treason in connection with the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia from 1998 to 2000. Yet, Dawit Isaak has never been formally charged or brought before a court.

As member / sympathizer of Amnesty International, I urgently call on you to disclose Dawit Isaak’s whereabouts and to release him immediately and unconditionally, as he is a prisoner of conscience who is detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression.
