Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to express my concern about Le Chi Thanh, who was arrested on 6 March 2026 by Thai immigration police and who is believed to be in danger of expulsion to Vietnam.

Le Chi Thanh is an anti-corruption activist from Viet Nam, where he had previously spent time in prison and was tortured. He came to Thailand legally and obtained a work permit after arrival. Thai authorities have now claimed that his work permit is invalid because the Vietnamese authorities have cancelled his passport. If Le Chi Thanh is forcibly returned to Viet Nam he is likely to face further human rights violations.

As member / sympathizer of Amnesty International, I therefore urge you not to forcibly return Le Chi Thanh to Viet Nam. Immediately release him and ensure that he and other asylum seekers have access to a full, effective, and fair asylum procedure. Pending his release, I ask that you ensure Le Chi Thanh is treated in full accordance with the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Nelson Mandela Rules).
