Dear President Díaz-Canel,

I am writing to bring to your attention the case of Donaida Pérez Paseiro, who was sent back to prison in June 2025, after having been granted a conditional early release in January 2025. This measure appears to be linked to her activism and her efforts to secure the freedom of her husband, Loreto Hernández García.

The Black activist and Yoruba priestess was detained on 16 July 2021, a day after her husband, and was sentenced to eight years in prison. Before their arrest, Donaida and her husband had peacefully participated in demonstrations. Their trial was unfair and they were sentenced in a judgement which repeatedly refers to the protesters’ political opposition to the government, which should have no bearing in a criminal case.

The couple was tried alongside 14 other protesters. To this day, hundreds of Cubans remain imprisoned for participating in anti-government protests. As member / sympathizer of Amnesty International, I therefore urge you to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of Donaida Pérez Paseiro and all those unjustly imprisoned in Cuba.
